Rotunda returns to AJPW in November 2000 after his WCW contract expired, while Dr. Death was still going strong & repaired his character in AJPW. At this time, Doc needed a tag-team partner because Gary Albright passed away and Big Van Vader left the company earlier in the year, so a returning Rotunda fresh out of WCW was a natural fit.
They reform the Varsity Club being known as "Varsity Club 2000", winning a lot of matches and winning the Real World Tag League '00 tournament, which was a PPV main event & important win where Rotunda and Doc honored the legacy of Giant Baba after their win. They got the trophies too. 😎🏆

2001
Nothing really noteworthy happened with the team this year, but the Varsity Club did start to team with Bart Gunn and win matches together. This year mostly revolved around Dr. Death's singles run against Bart Gunn and Keiji Muto, and setting the stage for the "Pro Wrestling Love Era" with all the wacky elements.

2002
The Varsity Club are featured more frequently on AJPW TV, and Mike Rotunda starts getting singles matches against the likes of Genichiro Tenryu and Keiji Muto. Rotunda even fights Dr. Death in the Champion Carnival '02 tournament (a friendly match).
Good/fun matches here and they get a lot of TV time, but this was moreso Bart Gunn's and Jim Steele's year, as well as KroniK's year.

2003
This is both Dr. Death's and Mike Rotunda's last match in AJPW, they only competed in January 2003 that year. Both were loyal to Mrs. Baba and chose to leave AJPW with some other gaijins after it was fully sold.
I consider this the last match when Doc was good, btw.
Rotunda was still in good shape, but he spent the majority of 2003 at home to be with his family IICR. He is after all Bray Wyatt's and Bo Dallas's dad.
2004
This is both Dos's and Rotunda's last match together of all time as the Varsity Club. The moment at 4:21:14 where Doc with the disabled/handicapped fan is a little wholesome moment makes me smile. 😊
This was truly when Doc got past his prime (not his Attitude Era days), he got overweight, and his face was always red. 🙁 This was because of throat cancer.
This match was taped on March 17, 2004, a week after he tested positive. Doc surprisingly moved around the ring fine in this match (his other matches were stinkers at this time) and did his character as always, but it's safe to say that in the Ruthless Aggression Era, he would have been done by WresteMania XX, with that PPV airing just days before Doc's and Rotunda's true last match as the "Varsity Club" took place.
For the life of me, I will not add the end of that particular episode in this comp. It legit makes me cry & the saddest thing I've seen in wrestling. Doc tells all the Japanese fans he has throat cancer, talking in a sickly voice, and looks extremely depressed. 😔 I just can't upload it (please respect this). In his book and a shoot he also admitted to almost contemplating suicide in the months following that.
Mike Rotunda on the other hand, looks healthy and wrestling as usual, but because of nagging injuries, wanting family time, and Doc getting sick (having no tag-team partner), he retired 2 months later on May 4, 2004.
Rotunda's retirement was a fun one and he ended his career in a good way, I think. After having his one last match in Japan, Rotunda is celebrated by a number of WWE HOF legends too like "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, Road Warrior Animal and Barry Windham. A fun way to go out as an all-time legend in the business, 22 years of kicking ass & taking names. 😎👍
